Over the years, Lawrence Manor has become known as one of the most family friendly Jewish Orthodox communities in all of Toronto. While the majority of people living in the neighbourhood are Jewish Orthodox, there are some others scattered throughout the area.
While much of the focus in Lawrence Manor is on the residential properties, there is plenty to see and do on Bathurst Street. This is the eastern edge of the neighbourhood, and includes Jewish schools as well as restaurants and retail stores.
One of the most distinct establishments in Lawrence Manor is the Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care. For many years, it has been known as one of the top nursing homes in Toronto.
History
Until the 1940’s, the current area occupied by Lawrence Manor was nothing more than farmland. However, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation purchased the land at this time with the hopes of creating a residential development.
By the 1950’s the plan was in effect, and new homes were going up all over the area.
The introduction of Lawrence Plaza, which was the largest shopping outlet in Toronto at the time, helped attract people from all over the city while showing what the neighbourhood had to offer.
Homes
While there are some newer homes in Lawrence Manor, the majority of the properties were built between 1951 and 1955. These homes consist primarily of two-story structures, as well as some bungalows and split-levels.
Bathurst street is full of apartment buildings as well as a modern luxury condo development.
