Wychwood Park is a cozy neighbourhood, with only 60 homes, located in a private area atop Davenport Ridge.

The community is so small that many outsiders don’t even know it exists. However, the residents of Wychwood Park have fallen in love with the tight knit feel and peaceful surroundings.

Unlike most neighborhoods in Toronto, Wychwood Park has its own executive council that is responsible for the parkland and private roads that make up the community.

Privacy comes at a cost, as every resident of Wychwood Park is required to pay a special park tax. This tax varies based on the size of the home.

History

In the 1870’s, Marmaduke Matthews founded Wychwood Park (named after his childhood home of Wychwood Forest, located in England).

The first home was built in 1874 with the second home constructed in 1877.

As one of the oldest communities in Toronto, Wychwood Park is known for more than its small size. In 1985, the Wychwood Park neighbourhood received designation as an Ontario Heritage Conservation district.

Homes

While some of the homes in Wychwood Park were built in the late 1800’s, the majority were constructed between 1906 and 1935.

Every home in the community is listed on the Toronto Historical Board’s Inventory of Heritage Properties.

Many of the English Arts and Crafts house style homes were designed by the well known architect Eden Smith.
